Pin Up
by Miriam Bohemia
Four years ago the painter Miriam Bohemia returned to her native country,
the Czech Republic, to discover the home her mother had been raised in
is now a brothel. The small town of 10,000, bordering West Germany and
servicing a military base, has 22 brothels in total. Pin Up is a resulting
series of paintings investigating the universal and often hidden impact
of the sex economy generated by the military in both war intervention
and invasion.
Says Bohemia, "Our own forces in Afghanistan were just issued a quarter
of a million condoms. I don't think that that they are going to be using
them on each other." Whether it is a NATO base bordering Germany,
an American encampment in Iraq or Canadian troops in Kandahar, all military
enclaves surrender the lives of women into sex in predictable ways.
Bohemia's paintings topple the former war illustration regime as an ironic
hybrid of the American Pinup and Communist propaganda poster. The frontline
of democracy becomes a grotesque burlesque. Each pin up girl, thick with
makeup, joins a regiment of sex workers in global survivalist masks questioning
even the impact of Canadian peace keeping.
The exhibition is one night only at [ d-leted ].
